Thanksgiving Day was the first day I truly missed the United States. I mean, how great is Thanksgiving as a holiday? Nobody has to work and you grub and watch football all day long – my kind of holiday. Instead of missing it, Lauren and I decided to bring Thanksgiving to Germany and we did it big. We spent 2 hours at the grocery shopping alone and we even wore our dirndls – true culture blending.
I can’t explain how fun it was sharing this very American holiday with my closest friends here. Everything was a hit. Well, the sweet potato casserole didn’t fly with most of the Germans who found it “too sweet”. If you live in Germany and eat German desserts, you may understand this. However, I definitely thought it was the best part of the meal.
I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking:
turkey, sweet potato casserole, veggies, stuffing, green bean casserole and salad
dinner prayer – thank you, Ben
ein prosit!
aftermath
Not pictured: pumpkin pie. This is particularly devastating because it was straight up homemade – no pre-made pie crusts or canned pumpkin in this part of the world. It turned out DELICIOUS. So delicious that I had it for breakfast the next day.
We also conveniently “forgot” to go around the table and say what we all are thankful for, but I think it was pretty clear without being said: food, friends, and Deutschland.

Bloggy buttons to go!
